Iconoclast, curmudgeon, artist and founder of Troon Vineyard, Dick Troon was the first of the current generation of vineyard pioneers. From his first plantings in 1972 to development of the Troon Vineyard winery in 1993 he has committed to natural farming and winemaking to produce the fine wines that he considers should be the "standard to which all other wines should be measured". Dick Troon chose the Applegate Valley in Southern Oregon when he recognized
that the combination of a Bordeaux-like climate and superior soil conditions
would naturally yield exceptional wines. Troon settled on a 32 acre plot
of land that received the maximum of daily exposure to the sun, had the
best soil profile, and the most favorable meso-climate for growing grapes.
Established as one of the original vineyards in the area (planting began
in 1972), today the vineyard holds some of the greatest Zinfandel, Cabernet
Sauvignon, and Chardonnay found anywhere in the world. |
